North Virginia has its fair share of old barns. If you are lucky enough to have one on your property, you already know how handy having a large “storage” space is when pursuing activities that are simply impossible to do in your house. Car collections, renovations of all kinds, antiques and collectables, artist studios, woodshops, even entertainment venues have taken over the original purpose of barns.

From an exterior painter’s point of view, these big wooden barns present some unique challenges. At award-winning, Reston-based All American Painting Plus, we’ve tackled these old beauties and have the experience to bring them back to “like new” condition.

It’s an involved process:

  • Assuming your barn is structurally sound, the first step is to carefully inspect the surface to be painted. Dry rot, “weathered” fibers, and splintered planks all need repair or replacement. The same goes for doors and window sills. The “plus” in All American Painting Plus stands for the additional services, like carpentry, that we offer.
  • After checking and replacing any worn caulking, the next step is a power washing to remove old and peeling paint. The barn has to completely dry out then we go after the rest of the paints with scrapers.
  • If the barn is mostly “weathered” wood, an oil based paint is called for. Otherwise an acrylic latex will be used. Typically, barns will take two coats of paint.

Backyard Sheds

Barns are big and beautiful but fairly rare. Much more popular are backyard sheds used principally for storing lawn care equipment. When they are new, they can be an attractive addition to the lawn. But after a few years of North Virginia weather, the shed can start to look pretty dingy.

Companies that manufacture sheds typically spray paint them. Spray painting is the most cost effective way to get the job done, but in the case of sheds, it results in an uneven application of paint. The flat (plank) sections will be even and smooth but grooves, corners, and ends are hit and miss.

A professional painting job does more than just improve the appearance of a shed. It protects the shed from the climate with an even coat across all parts of the structure. Professional painters, like those at All American Painting Plus, know that means using a roller on the planks and a brush on all the grooves and end pieces. Using a paint with a high sheen can also boost protection by reflecting solar heat and deflecting damaging UV rays.

If your shed is fast approaching “eyesore” status, or your big red barn needs a freshening, it’s time to pick up the phone and call North Virginia’s premiere residential painting contractors. All American Painting Plus is the painting service with the experience, talented craftsmen, and resources to bring your structures back to “like new” condition.
